Young Nigerian Writers On The Booksphere.

Howdy folks!! Hows your weekend progressing? We take a look at how Nigerian young writers are making waves at home and abroad.
Numerous publication houses in Nigeria, Ghana, Liberia and a few currently, proudly featured a lot of young Nigerian writers on their walls.

Macmillan Publication has been one of the pionering publishing company pre-independence Nigeria. Tara Press, Jim Okoye publication, Apex publication are other few that comes to mind.

Several young talents seam to boycot home grown, and climber unto many digital self publishing companies online. The advent of internet marketing lend a short arm to users of stylo and pot online.

According to Nigerian writer, critic, and editor, Adewale Maja-Pearce, many Nigerian publishing houses lack the tools and infrastructure, also markering machinery that lend hands to attractive, writers reward models.

Many of the publication houses are run by private companies with little wherewithall, guiding regulations, and protection control that help safe guide writers from piracy and thefts.

It is hardly surprising that ‘most Nigerian writers clamour for publishers abroad’ according to AMP. The Channels Tv recently established arts and book reviewing on the air wave, a marketing tool that now enable writers get extra funnels, patronage, and sales milage in Nigeria.

Reading habit and repute for books is a challenge in Africa, most media house equally dump book reviewing culture, (except Tribune & Sketch, also The Nation) in their national papers unlike its done abroad, such excercise ain't a common place in Nigeria.

Nigerian talented writers, now take time off, to put pen to paper, telling it all in story books, about their hallucinating (transitive) experiences growing up in a more or less technically recessioned economy.

One of the young unassuming star writer Charlse Dairo, who called a bluff of the labour market, soon after graduation left the labour queue to follow his dream.
Today, Charlse is the CEO of his own web and digital marketing publication company; employing more than twelve other younger version of himslef.

Chibundu

Chimamanda.

Chibundu Onuzu, while a student at the premier University, King's College London got a knock at writing stardom with her novel "The Spider King's Daughter" through Faber publication Uk.

Chibundu, started writing at the early age of ten, she never looked back a second till she migrated to the Uk. Described by her agent at Faber publication as a “very talented writer at the beginning of an exciting writing career.” Onuzo today is one of Nigeria's latest new generation of talented young writers, who have made their mark in the literary world in the past fifteen odd years.

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, the 2007 speial award winner of the Orange Prize for Fiction for her book, “Half of A Yellow Sun;” and Adaobi Tricia Nwaubani, including other novels such as “I Do Not Come To You By Chance,” novels which has also earn her several awards, including the Commonwealth Writers Prize.

Helon Habila, Helen Opeyemi, Sefi Atta, Amina Mohammad, Lean Abbati are other successful young Nigerian writers on the block who are making waves and livelihoods from writing.

Nigeria has repository of rich literary tradition spanning the last 70 years pre and post independence, producing icons for Nobel Prize for Literature e.g one Man Booker Prize winner, one Man Booker International Prize, one Orange Prize winner, and three winners of the Caine Prize for African Writing, famously described as “African Booker.”
including much in diaspora.

Publishers and writers say there are quite literally explosion of young Nigerian writers about to etch even more international recognition bench of award.

The ship crew of these cream of writers is the one attention grabbing opportunity spotted by Jeremy Weate, a British man who set up Cassava Republic publishing company in Abuja in 2007, married to a Nigerian wife Bibi Bakare-Yusuf, according to the couple , “This is a very exciting time and the best of Nigerian writing is still ahead.

According to Bibi “There is some awareness overseas of Nigerian authors and an increasing number of Nigerians winning awards, but we believe this is just the beginning, whichever way you view it home is still the best.

There is still a huge amount of talented undiscovered up-and-coming Nigeria writers and movie script curators out there . Most are struggling unknown in our various hoods, lets work together to unmasked them for stardom.

Do you know a budding young writer in your hood?

Thinking of starting up as a writer?

Then hit the subcribe button, we shall revert to you as soon as possible.

Yes! The Man Died.

Truly The Man Died!!

The sting of death stong yet another literary icon in Nigeria, a poet, novelist and writer extraordinaire, community leader of courage, inspiration and organic mine reservatory of inexhaustible vocabulary. Another thing that fell apart, which his vast community of people can never ever put together!

Pa Gabriel Imomotimi Okara, OON, is no more, like the rain his luminating spirit of the writers wall fell with the flood and returneth no more. He died just four weeks to his 98th birthday. How he raised ahead of nature's discerning poetic gift to the readers world.

Pa Okara was a father figure, leader, mentor, instructor, and ol chum. One of our best in the literary world. A forerunner and a pioneer in many aspects, he ventured into a very uniquely scriber's world that can only be described as indigenous literature.

An iconic genre of poetry, novel, literary works Africans, and Nigerians can truly identify with as indigenously traditional African art. This stood him out of the crowd of intellectual giant writers.

Described by some writers as “the first modernist poet of Anglophone Africa”, our beloved Pa Okara belonged to the very best amongst peers of poetic writer spilling from his inner repository of knowledge effortlessly.

He was among the first to launch Nigeria into the international literary arena with brands of poetry and stories that were unmistakably indigenous but very outstanding.

Pa Okara was born on April 21, 1921, to an entrepreneurial Ijaw chief, Samson Okara and Martha Olodiama, in Bumoundi, Bayelsa state.
As a young Okara, he attended Government College Umuahia, Abia state, and moved to Yaba Higher College. After high school, he started working as a printer and bookbinder for a publishing company in Lagos 1945.

During World War II, he tried to join the British Royal Air Force but failed the medicals. He later worked for the British Overseas Airway Corporation, which changed to British Airways.

In 1949, he studied journalism at Northwestern University, USA. The late Pa Okara, had a few flings with marriages, and divorced three times, his survived by four resourcesful children.

May his soul find heavenly rest.

Get Creative and Make that Extra Fortune!!

Get Creative and turn your revenue into a fountain!.

Jay-Z and Beyouncè, got to fame and fortune through creative investment thinking.

Many at times people imagine creative thinking or imagination is only for artists?
We all felt creativity was considered a waste of time? Any idea is good enough to stream in money, happiness and loads of fun in reward? Even though that mentality still exists today, in education, creativity is one of the most valuable skills in today’s complex world. Those who are progressively walking along use creative thinking and imaginations.

Businesses are consistently looking for creative employees, so as to attaing higher magins, does improved profitability.
Artists all over the world step up their creative game, in today's hugely competitive entertainment and technology driven society.

Modern time entrepreneurs are basically artists in creative wolves clothing. Adapting artistic creative models into their management strategic evolutions.

Creative thinking is a well respected skill these days, with enough practice, everyone can think more creatively. If youre an artist or musician, imagine standing on the stage, and the audiene repeating your song or usual stanza even before you grab the microphone! Ahaaaaaa.

Yet you walk into some pros, who says my fans or followers feel “I’m not a creative person.” That’s an exageration and you know it. Dont you fell fulfilled each time you recreate or improve on some of your style or brand landings?

In recent times, our perception of a creative person is just wrong. Let me ask you reading this script. "What do you associate with the word creativity?"

Im sure you will consider a hair stylist, fashion designer, a painter, a musician, or artist?

According to Phillip Kotler in his book
"creative marketing "- Creativity is nothing more than doing old things in a different way. Pure and simple right?

However, if during a specific TIME you solve a peculiar problem in a different way, you’re creative, and that’s pretty cool. It does not mean Channels TV is doing anything different from chunning out repetitive information on the terrestial air waves. She remained the best TV station (12th time) in Nigeria. Simply by re-creating, re-inventing, and improving the brand perception of herself positioning in the broadcaster's space.

It’s simply not just hard work, but doing those processes smartly. How often do you challenge yourself to come up with novel ways of doing things? It’s not so much about being different. It’s about the challenge to create new connections in your mind.

That’s one of the most satisfying things on earth, you get to set a new level of reward system in your mind. If for example you produce an album of movie, within 3months of the soap, you became a hit on the chat. Your next aim, will be to improve on the standard set. Since you stand a remakable stance for extra million dutch or bentley limousin..ahaaaa!!

Becoming a creative professional does not and should not cost an arm and a leg, neither should you need to travel the nation to improve your creativity. You only need to do a few things right, and with steadfast discipline.

1. Set limitations

The biggest mistake a lot of us make with creative thinking is to seek out error. Like many others before us, understand its simplicity that drives creativity and it thrives on freedom.

In most circumstance, constraints, and limitations forces us to think creatively. So next time you’re blaming your manager or client for thinking too small, you should thank them.

Work withing your limited resources, try and remain dynamic. If your show real budget come out N30,000.00. Find a way to reach the target with N15,000.00. Work outside the box, to achive within the box ultimate. When your resources and time are limited, be flexibly forced to find novel solutions.

2. Get very bored

The first phase of laying the foundation of a creative process is often, the most herculean.

When you find it difficult to set the first step, write the first sentence or draw the first line, you might get extremely bored with so many obstacles, writers block, flimsy space fear etc. Just get up and do something else, fix yourself a cup of tea, juice, or jigger of J.D. Doesn’t matter what it is. Just chill away from it all.

Once youre refreshed and your imagination is runing wild. Moments like that, you realize how great it is to create new things, connect the dots, and come up with new novel ideas.

3. Do something you can’t

Dont you ever say never, remember its not over till the last drop is empty. Keep in your mind, the guy or folk who had the world record laid, was another human like you not a spirit.

A young fella just finished university, and had spent months looking for job endlessly with no success.
Walked into an autosales car lot. Luckily the manager was desperate at the time for a new good sale marketing person.

When he approached him the only question the manager asked " can you drive a car?" The young fella said "Yes"

"Then you must know how to sell one! The manager"! said.

Come in on monday as start. Goodluck boy. Hey! This young boy not recognising a spoke from a gear stick, worked his ass out learning to maneuver a car all weekend.

When he arrived at work the next week, that manager had been transfered to a new bigger car lot in Lekki. The young man gradually settle into his new job without pressure. He later worked his way to become the lot's manager.

Just say yes, confidently, then figure out how you can do it better later.

4. Chuff your ideas before a critical person.

More often than not, African' has a very strong tradition of knocking off a new idea, with a gentle nudge of the head "it can't work" chuffling it off pesimitically.

When people critic your ideas, Be positive it’s for a reason. Nothing is perfect. And everything can be done better. It help you see avenue linkage to your one single ideation.

You need someone to point you in the right direction. Also, you need someone to help you do it in the right way. You don’t want to ask someone who doesn’t wish you well for their opinion. Because they get satisfaction from shooting down your bright ideas and team.

Find someone who cares. If you can’t, get a coach or mentor who can serve as your soundboard? Talk to the Unmasked team. It’s worth it to have a second guess for your ideas and not say, “this is the best thing ever!” We are just a cellphone button away.

- Find new ways of re-inventing an old style.
-Do things differently.
-Do it all the time.
-Rebrand your persona.
-Develop a unique brand for yourself, before you know it, you’re a creative person.

Make Money From Comedy.

Do you want to make a living being a Comedian?.

Ok! Its cool.
Comedians get a thrill from making people laugh. A comedian develops a unique style, skill, and body of work as an entertainer. Many Nigerians of middle ages where farmiliar commic comedians.
Likes of Late Papa Moses Adejumo Olaiya (father of stage comedy in Africa) Ade love, to mention a few.

Late Pa Professor Pellar who created enchanting comedic stories into magic profession in Nigeria. Most of these comedians mentioned steady working team relationship successes as partially responsible for their continuing in the profession. however unlikely a similar meteoric rise may be.

According to Ace comedian Ali Baba the father of modern West African wide comedy industry said “Everybody in the continent thinks Im very funny. It’s just that I’m crazy enough to be best with tenacity and choice of prospects as a comedian”.

A comedian works long hours for little (if any) pay and endures enormous uncertainty, never knowing where the next pay cheque will ever spring from.

An average comedian may do upwards of six sets per week, with the rest of the time spent writing materials, watching other comedians act online and digital tv or youtube, and keeping other additional jobs just to keep body and soul going including meeting their home domestic needs and pay rents as it falls due.

A successful comedian must be quick-witted, able to think on his or her feet, dedicated, and good insight of visualising opportunities in all circumstances around themselves.

A great deal of self confidence is equally required if one is to last over two years in the comedy profession, failures, rejections, disappointments are part of the game puzzle in the industry.

Comedians in Nigeria today have developed association and private club venues, where they usually schedule weekly show, bunced around rehearsals seminars, workshops with opportunity to critique one another’s sketches and performances.

Its often imperative that comedian be resourcefull with bank reserve of jokes, so as not be seen repetively re-ochestrating same jokes all over.

The ability to work with others is critical to success in comedy groups. Some choose to form collaborative team in major highly mobile urban cities, where actors and comedians congregate due to the larger opportunity (e.g the popular Evans square Lagos, MUSON centre, National theater Lagos) for work script sales.

Nigerian comedy industry have hugely upscale to the extent a few have their shows on TV, (The other news by popular comedian Okeh Bakasi, the AY show, Sadique Clique Kano tv, etc) other solo comedians perform at club, circuits, parties, and conference events adding glamour to social gatherings around the country, on sequences giving rib cracking moments.

The introduction of comedy MC' at major social events in the world now is creating very competitive atmosphere for comedians at global and local social gatherings.

Becoming a comedian.

1. You don’t need a degree in the field.

Degrees in comedy are very few and far between. No one college or Unny prepare pupils for the specific comedy career. Stand Up Comedy is undeniable a skill or talent you pick up from your environmental relationship, or drop into some of the Academy in Nigeria, Senegal, Morroco, Uk, US, France and Russia, (most working comedian will tell you that practice makes perfect), there are also plenty of ways to get the experience, you may work as an intern with a celebrated comedian.

In fact, taking different courses for example, theater art, political science studies, sociology can give u a good start but not compulsory.

Even if you don’t do any of these things in college, you can still pursue a career in comedy. Recently (now Dr Helen) Helen Paul went ahead to obtain a higher qualification not with standing her career in comedic profession.

2. Extracurriculars can pave the path.

Joining a college arts group, taking an improved after class, and attending comedy performances can all help you start creating and honing your skill or talent.

In the comedy industry, there is an element of luck when it comes to getting discovered, the more you put yourself out there, (working and collaborating with others) the more your work will be seen, heard and eventually noticed.

3. Critical thinking and writing skills matter.

According to the (ctctv2.com)website of popular Christian Pastor radio journalist Obuse-Zelee of Max radio 102.3 FM, flexible range of writing skills is essential to become a successful standup comedian.

Also imperative? The ability to think critically, and write well.Creative writing courses are a great place to start, especially if they’re geared towards comedy like the Writing and Producing Comedy course offered by NFTS.

Many jokes are based on observational humor. The first thing a comic will do is make observations about the world around them and common life experiences....Then they will examine one of those observations and think about the common ways that most people intuitively interpret that observation (the more universal the better) visually.

At this point the comic must look for alternative interpretations that no one else has considered but are just as true, if not more so. The more the alternative interpretation is unintuitive yet true, the funnier it is.”

4. A writing buddy will make you better.

Many working comedians stand by the value of collaboration. Comedians who write materials on their computer dont often feel the fun in the script episode.
You want to create material in the presence of another human being, so you can see it on their faces whether they enjoy it or feel bored.

There’s always the element of competitiveness. When it’s friendly, it’s fun. If its boring then there is no reward.

Understanding how musicians make money!!

A lot of people this dayd follow the trend and talk about an artist driving the best automobile, living in the best choice properties, a million dollar signet ring and necklace, hair style, bodyline tatoe, and fashion clothline.

Their income stream from several sources, and only those who has the management mind set, and disciplined financial knowledge that last the 5-10 years stardom yard scale.

Money flow through the following carefully managed streams for musicians.

Copyright — ownership of songs and albums as creative works of natural intelligence and talents. The state gives protection and payment right to musicians ( that is originator of lyrics)who originates an album solo or duo.

Such revenue represent “Royalties” the sums paid to rights-holders when their creations are sold, distributed, embedded in other media or monetized in any other way. Songwriters and producers even in the digital divide also get protected and earn similar right to income.

In the music industry copyrights consist of composition (lyrics, melody) and sound recording (literally, the audio recording of the song).Sound recording and copyrights are owned by recording artists and their record labels.

There are other distinctions between sound recording licenses that generate royalties, such as performance rights (for a song’s played on, AM/FM radio, satellite radio and Internet radio) and reproduction rights (for sales of physical CDs or digital music files) and song rights (for song use in film, television and other media) copyright belongs to the artists and the record label sponsoring the musician.

Income from performing Live music on off stage.

Live events, and gigs (e.g Stonehenge, Frankfurt show, Texas Gala night canibal) are quickly taking the world by storm creating lucrative platform for musicians globally.
Increasingly this is why musical tours are getting festivals invites and drawing incredible fan followings. This days cross atlantic duo and live concerts happened between musicians globally. Its phenomena revenue support collaborations. Most tours, festivals national gigs, one-off concerts — are commanding some of the highest ticket prices ever for artist and label owners.

Advertising

Commodity and services backup publicity through brand partnerships offer artists the ability to endorse a brand they might genuinely like, and get access to additional revenue stream while they sponsor pitche statement of recommendation.

The new trend of social media and tech developers have carved out other stream niche for musicians to earn exyra revenue, such the YouTube monetization, blogger monetization, vemio stream, poadcast for musics, including SEM advertising that comes with those sites. The Korean music “Gangnam made $2 million from 2 billion YouTube views and downloads. Some musical video sites in the US & Europe still offer upwwards of $2,500 per 1000 stream.

Fashion, & bodyline Cosmetic Merchandising, and Other Direct Sells

Sales of non-music products like perfumes, body lotions, souvenir, and clothing lines these combinations gives artists advantage of for decades — but in the digital era, musicians can also get creative with orchestrating local gigs, where they get to play and sell some of their CDs, videos, merchandise to revellers, taking the game direct to fans outside traditional model of music marketing.

The music industry globally now accepted streaming as another legal revenue source, and several media are emerging by the day. As many ICT developers wants a fairs slice of the cash in the musical industry.

Making money in the music industry isn't always as simple as described above a lot emolument and salary including other expenses are often incurred in the processes of funneling your music to the end users.

The pay structure of many musician or music industry services are based on percentages.
Either for a one-off deal and freelance-style work and may differ from music industry careers base to the function of services they provide.

Whichever block of the service value chain you choose, and pathern of marketing. The followings represent value chain service structure that musician pay record must accommodate.

Music Managers: Managers receive an agreed percentage of income from the artists they work for or pay managers fixed salary.
Managers organise so many activities onbehalf of their artists, including profile brand development.

Music Promoters: Promoters make money on sales of ticket for the gigs they promote.
Some promoters takes a percentage of the proceeds from the show after recouping their costs, giving the remaining money (split deal) to the artists.

The promoter may agree on a fixed payment with the musicians for their performance, and then any money left after costs is theirs to keep.

Some promoters also help the artist by giving publicity and brand caeer promotion. All in the aim of piloting the artist to make extra income.

Music Agents: Agents take an agreed-percentage of fees for their organised shows, they arrange onbehalf of the musicians. Usually the agents often look for gig event locations, and concerts in much same way as the promoter but at lower level.

Make money as an artist.

Start Earning Money As an Artist.

Often times, artists are told or internally assume in fear, that they can’t make a viable career out of their highly cherished passion.

Truth is, while some artists might struggle to make ends meet, others make a good living by getting creative, innovatively selling their work, and supplementing their income.

Quite often we hear or know about a struggling artists, but being an artist is definitely a remarkably viable career option; provided the professional
is willing to put the effort in.

While some artists might struggle to make ends meet, others make a good living from their art works, skill, and advisory serviced. These group of artists don’t just sell their work; they also use other methods to supplement their income.

The truth is, most artists can make money—they’re just not sure where, and how to start. Here are some tips to get the ball rolling so you can start earning money as a pro or hobby artist.

1.Take internships

It’s useful for artists to think about how they’ll make money a few years before they actually graduate. One of the easiest ways to make connections in the art world is to take an art internship, as you get to work alongside established artists and private gallery enterprise.

Interning with galleries will give you the chance to work behind the scenes of art selling, which can teach you, and show you ways to market your own art.

If you want to do an internship, apply for as many as possible; often these positions are oversubscribed, as there are very few successful galleries about, so there is no guarantee that you will be offered a place at the flick of your pen.

2.Teach the subject

Teachers earn a consistent income within the art world, so you can consider teaching art for financial stability. You can organise an after hour, or weekend arts training academy. You can also set up an online step by step course. While at the same time selling your finished art to students, their parents, and family friends

However, note of caution, it is important to make sure you have some experience for the role; lots of new graduates apply to teach art but just don’t have the experience. Normally these positions are very popular, so you need an edge to be considered.

3.Reduce your living expenses

The first step to make money is to carefully examine your market, your financies, and support models; spend money wisely remembering that rentage (see if you can work from your home) is a big expense.
Established artists make a consistent living, but for new artists it’s hard to guarantee how much you will earn. If you don’t earn enough one month and you have expensive bills to cover, you could end up in debts.

You can take the pressure off by reducing your living expenses (say down sizing your home location, move to the edge of town where rents are lower and spacious for a spare space for your art work)and moving somewhere cheaper.

It’s normally less expensive to live out of the urban areas, though logistic often take a toll, you can save even more money if you live in the countryside rather than the urban area. This is a difficult step, but it’s a sacrifice that makes it much easier towards becoming a professional artist.

4.Network with other artists and creative professionals.

To make money as an artist, its imperative that you network. Networking gives you the opportunity to talk to established artists, art agents, and buyers of art. They will give you insights into buying and selling of art works, and they may be willing to help you with exposure.

Make it a point of duty to visit art exhibitions and events including galleries; whem you meet and speak to more people at events and exhibitions, your career will start to gain momentum.

Artists rely on the art community to thrive and succeed, and the only way to join the community is by networking. You can also find groups or community of artists on the social media. Join as many as possible.

5.Create an art budget

Take your art career as an enterprise, even if as a hobby, so it makes sense that as an artists you have an art budget as well as art business plan model. If your goal is to be a professional artist and you need to spend money on supplies and travel, you must budget for these expenses pegging them against projected income or sales.

Sit down and work out your monthly art costs, including equipment and travel. This will be your monthly budget, which you can then add to rent and bills. This will help you to make sure you don’t overspend or underspend.

6.Create prpfessional profiles on creative selling websites and blogsite.

Take that plung with a remarkable chance to showcase your art to the world, so a larger audience will get to see your work. In today’s world, social media is one of the easiest ways to advertise, so you should use this to your advantage. Other members of the site can also buy your art, so this is a good way to get your first art sale. The best part is that you can sign up for free on many of the online spaces, so more people can see your art without you spending a single Naira or dollar.
